The allure of lazy summer evenings spent basking in the sunshine, hosting barbecues with friends and family, or simply enjoying a cup of tea in the fresh air is undeniable.

But the cost of decking materials can sometimes put a damper on those aspirations. Here's where the advantages of softwood decking step in, offering a compelling combination of affordability, practicality, and natural charm.

Budget-Friendly: A Key Advantage of Softwood Decking

Softwood decking is undeniably the most cost-effective option compared to hardwood and composite decking alternatives. This makes it perfect for those who want to create a beautiful outdoor space without breaking the bank. Let's face it, home improvement projects can quickly escalate in cost.

Softwood offers a breath of fresh air, allowing you to achieve your vision for a fraction of the price. Whether you're planning a cosy patio for your morning coffee or a large entertaining deck for summer soirées, the advantages of softwood decking allow you to achieve your vision without sacrificing functionality or aesthetics.

A Sustainable Source

Many softwood options, such as pine and spruce, come from fast-growing trees. This makes them a more environmentally friendly choice compared to slow-growing hardwood decking options. In today's world, being mindful of our environmental impact is crucial. Choosing softwood allows you to create your dream outdoor space with the knowledge that you're minimising your footprint. This is another advantage of softwood decking that environmentally conscious homeowners will appreciate.

Easy on the Eyes (and Hands)

Softwood boasts a natural warmth and beauty that complements any garden design. The rich tones and visible wood grain add a touch of rustic charm, blending seamlessly with existing greenery and landscaping.

However, the advantages of softwood decking extend beyond aesthetics. The lighter weight of softwood compared to hardwood makes it easier to work with, allowing for a smoother DIY decking installation experience. Cutting, shaping, and fitting the decking boards becomes a more manageable task, even for those without extensive carpentry experience. This translates to potential cost savings, as you might not need to hire a professional for installation.

Built to Last (with a Little TLC)

Modern pressure-treated softwood offers excellent durability, resisting rot and insect damage. This pressure treatment involves forcing a preservative solution deep into the wood fibres, significantly increasing lifespan. Here in the UK, where the weather can be unpredictable, this resilience is crucial. However, it's important to remember that no material is invincible.

Regular decking maintenance, such as cleaning and staining, will further extend the lifespan of your softwood deck, ensuring you enjoy your outdoor haven for years to come. The good news is that maintaining a softwood deck is a relatively simple process, requiring minimal effort and expense.

Softwood Decking: The Perfect Choice, Weighing the Advantages

While softwood offers many advantages, it's important to consider your specific needs and priorities. Here's a breakdown to help you decide...

Choose Softwood If:

You're on a budget and want to create a beautiful outdoor space for a fraction of the cost.

Sustainability is a major concern of yours.

You're planning a DIY project and appreciate the ease of working with softwood.

You enjoy the natural aesthetic of wood and the warmth it brings to an outdoor space.

Consider Hardwood If:

Your deck will be exposed to heavy traffic or harsh weather conditions.

You desire a truly weather-resistant option with minimal maintenance requirements.

You have a specific colour preference not readily available in soft

The Final Touches: Bringing Your Softwood Deck to Life

Once you've chosen your perfect softwood decking, it's time to consider the finishing touches. Staining your deck not only enhances its natural beauty but it adds an extra layer of protection against the elements. Explore a variety of decking treatments and stain colours to complement your existing garden design and create the desired aesthetic. You can also add a touch of personality with decorative features like planters, outdoor furniture, and fairy lights.

If you are ready to start planning your summer decking project, then head down to your trusted timber yard for premium materials, DIY advice and much more!
urn:store:1:blog:post:22https://www.bendreybros.co.uk/diy-decking-tips-building-the-perfect-outdoor-spaceDIY Decking Tips: Building the Perfect Outdoor Space
As spring approaches, you might be considering adding decking to your outdoor space. As the allure of al fresco living captivates homeowners, the importance of a well-designed outdoor space has never been more important.

A carefully crafted deck extends your living area and serves as a tranquil oasis for relaxation, entertaining guests, and a place to soak up your surroundings.

Whether you're a seasoned DIY enthusiast or embarking on your first decking project, this guide will equip you with the knowledge and inspiration needed to transform your outdoor area into a space you’ll want to show off.

From selecting the right decking materials to mastering essential construction techniques, let's dive into the tips for creating the perfect outdoor retreat in your garden.

1. Plan and Design

The first step in any project should start with a solid plan and of course a decking design. Start by assessing your outdoor space and determine the size and shape of your deck. Consider the layout in relation to your house, existing features and of course the house itself.

If you have plenty of space to play with this may be easier, however, for those with smaller gardens, strategically think about placement, size and accessibility to the deck.

At this stage, it is worth checking that your DIY decking project is compliant with planning permission regulations. Although the decking itself is covered by permitted development, meaning you do not need to apply for planning permission, the height and size can caveat this.

2. Choosing the Right Decking Material

The decking material you choose mostly comes down to personal preference. Some love the look of natural hardwood or softwood decking, while others may appreciate the low maintenance of composite decking. Each of these materials has benefits and drawbacks including durability, decking maintenance requirements and aesthetic appeal.

Whether you are calling in a professional or taking on the DIY decking project solo, remember to consider the supporting structure of the deck such as posts, joists and beams to ensure safety and longevity.

3. Prepare the Site

Once you have decided on a design and have your decking materials ready, it is time to prepare the site where the decking will go. Clear the area from vegetation, rocks and other debris before levelling out the ground and ensure there is proper drainage to prevent water pooling under the deck. It is also worth using a ground control fabric to discourage the growth of weeds.

4. Installing the Decking Framework

Next is to lay out the frame for the decking using treated timber joists and beams, ensuring there is proper spacing and alignment to support the decking boards. For long-lasting decking, use galvanised or stainless steel fixings to prevent rust and corrosion.

5. Lay the Decking Boards

When laying the decking boards you’ll want to start by laying the first row of boards along the longest side of the deck, using stainless steel screws of hidden fastening systems for a clean finish. Allow for expansion gaps between the boards to accommodate temperature and climate changes.

6. Finishing Touches

To give your DIY deck a high-class finish, it's all about the final touches. This can include trimming any excess decking boards for a neat edge, and applying a protective finish or decking oil to softwood or hardwood decking to prolong the life and appearance of the wood. Consider using features like built-in seating, planters or lighting for added functionality and style.

7. Regular Maintenance

Now that you’re DIY decking project is complete, to ensure enjoyment for years to come, regular decking maintenance is necessary, especially for softwood and hardwood decking. Inspect the deck annually for signs of wear, rot, or damage and clean the surface regularly to remove dirt, debris, and mildew. Reapply protective finishes as needed to maintain your deck’s appearance and integrity.

With these DIY decking tips in hand, you're well on your way to creating a stunning outdoor space you will want to show off to friends and family. Remember, building a deck is not just about construction; it's about building an inviting space where you can unwind and entertain.

Whether you opt for hardwood elegance, eco-friendly composite decking, or classic treated softwood, the key is to infuse your style and preferences into every aspect of the design. So, roll up your sleeves, gather your tools, and get stuck into your DIY decking project for countless days of relaxation and enjoyment on your newly built deck!

Get in touch with us to discuss your DIT decking project for further advice on materials, set-up process, and more.
urn:store:1:blog:post:21https://www.bendreybros.co.uk/transform-your-home-with-timber-claddingTransform Your Home With Timber Cladding
Timber cladding, with its timeless appeal and natural warmth, has become a popular choice for homeowners looking to enhance both the exterior and interior of their living spaces.

Whether renovating your home to create a striking first impression or seeking to add character and texture to interior walls, timber cladding offers a versatile solution that can elevate any space. Whether it's a classic picket fence or a sturdy timber barricade proper maintenance is crucial to ensure longevity and preserve the charm of your property. Let’s delve into the art of fence maintenance, with practical tips to ensure your boundaries last for years to come.

Section 1: Assessing the Current State of Your Fence

Before diving into maintenance tasks, it's essential to assess the current condition of your fence. Walk around your property and inspect each section carefully. Look for signs of wear, damage, or rot. Take note of any loose fence panels, rust spots, or missing hardware. This initial assessment will guide you in prioritising tasks and addressing specific issues.

Spring is a great time to do your fencing checks due to adverse weather conditions throughout winter that could have affected your fencing due to excess water, cold conditions, or storm damage.

Section 2: Cleaning and Preparing the Fence Surface

Cleaning is the first step in any maintenance routine. For wooden fences, start by removing debris, leaves, and cobwebs with a broom. Then, use a mild detergent or a specialised wood cleaner to scrub away dirt and stains.

Section 3: Repairing and Replacing Fence Components

After cleaning, turn your attention to repairs. Replace any damaged or rotting wood, ensuring that your fence maintains structural integrity. Tighten loose screws or nails, and replace any missing hardware.

If you’re after quality fencing materials, head to our timber yard, where you’ll find a variety of timber for DIY fencing projects as well as a range of pre-made fencing panels. Our experts are also on hand to answer any questions you may have regarding the different types of fencing, installation, maintenance and more.

For quick fixes try using gravel boards to patch up missing fencing slats due to storm damage. They're pressure treated, heavy duty and come in a variety of sizes to suit most fence types.

Section 4: Staining and Sealing Timber Fencing

Wooden fences benefit greatly from timber treatments, staining and sealing, providing protection against the elements and enhancing the natural beauty of the wood. Choose a high-quality wood stain that complements your outdoor aesthetics.

Before applying the stain, make sure the fence is clean and dry. Apply the stain evenly with a brush or sprayer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Once the stain has dried, seal the wood with a clear sealant to add an extra layer of protection against moisture, UV rays, and pests.

Section 5: Routine Inspections

Prevention is often more straightforward than extensive repairs. Implement a routine inspection schedule to catch potential issues early. Check for loose boards, sagging sections, or signs of pest infestation. Ensure that gates open and close smoothly, and lubricate hinges and latches as needed. A proactive approach to maintenance will save you time and money in the long run.

Section 6: Landscaping Considerations

Take into account the surrounding landscape when maintaining your fence. Trim overgrown vegetation that may be in contact with the fence, as it can cause damage over time. Avoid piling mulch or soil against the base of wooden fences, as this can lead to moisture retention and accelerate decay. Maintaining a clear perimeter around your fence contributes to its longevity.

A well-maintained fence not only enhances the curb appeal of your property but also serves its practical purposes effectively. By regularly assessing, cleaning, repairing, and protecting your fence, you invest in the long-term durability and aesthetic appeal of your outdoor space. Embrace the art of fencing maintenance, and enjoy the benefits of a strong, long-lasting property boundary.

Get in touch for more information.

urn:store:1:blog:post:17https://www.bendreybros.co.uk/product-comparison-standard-overlap-panels-vs-premium-overlap-panelsProduct comparison: Standard Overlap Panels vs Premium Overlap Panels
Commonly referred to as “Larch-Lap”, “Waney-Lap” or simply “Lap” panels, Overlap panels are one of the best-selling styles of fencing in the UK.

Bendrey Bros stock two ranges of Overlap panel, the Standard Overlap and the Premium Overlap panel. Manufactured in the UK, both ranges are pressure treated for durability, have vertical battens on each side of the overlapped horizontal slats and are finished with a top capping strip.

Standard Overlap Panels

The Standard Overlap is our economy fence panel. The framework on the front of the panel consists of three 16 x 38mm vertical battens between 18 x 50mm horizontal battens at the top and bottom. The back of the panel is reinforced with five 16 x 38mm vertical battens.

Constructed using waney edged slats (sometimes known as “wavey” or “live” edge), the Standard Overlap has a traditional appearance and is available in three heights from 4’ (1219mm) to 6’ (1829mm) high, all height options are 6’ (1829mm) wide.

Premium Overlap Panels

These quality fence panels are framed with horizontal battens at the top and bottom and five vertical battens on each side. As the layout of the 18 x 38mm framework is the same on both sides, these sturdy panels are perfect for shared boundaries.

Square edged slats give the Premium Overlap fence panels an attractive, uniform appearance.

Our Premium Overlap panels are available in four heights from 3’ (914mm) to 6’ (1829mm) high, all height options are 6’ (1829mm) wide.

Conclusion

The Standard Overlap is competitively priced, the quality is good when compared with Overlap Panels that are stocked by other merchants, many of which are dip-treated rather than pressure treated. If our Premium Overlap doesn’t fit your budget then our Standard Overlap is a great alternative.

Our Premium Overlap is just that, premium. You’ll struggle to find a better overlap panel. Not only is there more framework on the Premium Overlap, but the framework is also thicker which makes the panel noticeably more solid than the Standard Overlap panel. When installed using 100 x 100mm wooden posts or concrete posts and gravel boards, this robust, attractive fence will last many years.

Bendrey Bros approach to our product range is that we only stock products that we would be happy to use in our own homes. As timber merchants, we often encounter customers who are unsure about which type of wood to choose for their specific needs.

In the realm of softwood vs. hardwood, it's essential to delve into the unique characteristics of each. Below we explore the distinctions between softwood and hardwood, helping you make informed decisions for your next project.

Softwood

Softwood, as the name suggests, comes from coniferous trees, which are evergreen and typically have needle-like leaves. Softwood is known for its versatility and is widely used in various applications.

Physical Characteristics of Softwood:

Softwood tends to be lighter in weight and has a lower density compared to hardwood. This makes softwood easier to work with, making it an excellent choice for construction projects where ease of handling and installation are essential.

Strength and Durability of Softwood:

While softwood is generally less dense, it doesn't necessarily mean it lacks strength. Softwood can be durable and resistant to decay, especially when treated with preservatives. However, it may not be as naturally resistant to pests and decay as some hardwoods.

Common Uses For Softwood:

Softwood is often preferred for construction framing, outdoor decking, fencing, softwood sleepers and other structural applications. Its affordability and wide availability make it a popular choice for large-scale projects.

Hardwood

Hardwood comes from deciduous trees and is prized for its strength, durability, and attractive appearance.

Physical Characteristics of Hardwood:

Hardwood is denser and heavier than softwood. Its density contributes to its durability and resistance to wear and tear, making it a suitable choice for furniture and high-traffic areas.

Strength and Durability of Hardwood:

Hardwood is renowned for its robustness and longevity. It is resistant to scratches and dents, making it ideal for flooring and furniture that endure heavy use. Hardwoods also possess natural resistance to pests and decay, reducing the need for chemical timber treatments.

Common Uses For Hardwood:

Hardwood is often chosen for high-quality furniture, decking material, cabinetry, flooring, and decorative elements. It is a preferred material for projects where aesthetics and longevity are paramount.

Choosing between softwood vs. hardwood depends on various factors, including budget considerations, project type, maintenance requirements, and environmental impact.

Choosing the Right Wood for Your Project

1. Budget Considerations

Softwood is generally more budget-friendly than hardwood. If cost is a significant factor in your project, softwood may be the more economical choice.

2. Project Type

Consider the specific demands of your project. For structural elements like framing, softwood may be suitable. For furniture or flooring where aesthetics and durability are crucial, hardwood is often the better option.

3. Maintenance Requirements

Softwood may require more maintenance, such as regular sealing or painting, to protect it from the elements. Hardwood, on the other hand, often requires minimal maintenance due to its natural resistance to decay and pests.

4. Environmental Impact

If sustainability is a concern, consider the environmental impact of your wood choice. Many softwood species are fast-growing and are often sourced from sustainably managed forests. Hardwoods, on the other hand, may come from slower-growing trees, and it's essential to choose suppliers with responsible harvesting practices.

In the debate between softwood vs. hardwood, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. The right choice depends on your project's specific requirements, budget constraints, and personal preferences. As a timber merchant, we offer a wide range of both softwood and hardwood options, ensuring that you can find the perfect fit for your needs.

Whether you prioritise affordability, strength, or aesthetics, understanding the differences between softwood vs. hardwood empowers you to make an informed decision for your next DIY project.
urn:store:1:blog:post:15https://www.bendreybros.co.uk/10-decking-design-ideas-210 Decking Design Ideas

Transforming your outdoor space into a haven of relaxation and entertainment starts with the right decking design. Consider a hardwood deck with intricate inlay patterns for a truly bespoke decking design that showcases the natural beauty of the wood.

Consider creating a deck that becomes a work of art in itself by opting for intricate inlay patterns or contrasting wood tones. Picture a border in a darker hardwood, framing the main deck in a lighter shade. This not only adds visual interest but also emphasises the natural beauty and character of the hardwood.

Contemporary Composite

Go modern in your decking design by using composite decking materials, which have sleek lines and come in a variety of colours. By using composite you can achieve a chic look by combining different shades to create visually striking patterns. Composite materials provide durability and low maintenance, making them an excellent choice for a contemporary lifestyle. Experiment with different board orientations, such as horizontal and vertical, to add a touch of sophistication to your outdoor space.

Softwood Decking Designs

Try creating a tranquil retreat with softwood decking. This timeless design adds a touch of class to any deck, enhancing the overall aesthetic. Consider using contrasting colours or different wood species for the herringbone pattern to create a visually stunning effect. The geometric precision of the herringbone design attracts the eye and adds a sense of order to your outdoor retreat.

Decking with a View

Maximise your scenic surroundings by choosing a design that complements the landscape. Consider a wraparound deck or glass railings to seamlessly connect your outdoor space with nature. Choose a design that allows unobstructed views, making your deck the perfect vantage point for enjoying sunsets, landscapes, or cityscapes. Incorporate materials that harmonise with the natural surroundings, such as stone accents or plants.

Multi-Level Decking Design

Elevate your design by incorporating multiple levels. Create distinct zones for dining, lounging, and even a cosy fire pit area. This design adds depth and functionality to your outdoor space. Use neutral tones, clean lines, and strategic plantings to create a zen garden atmosphere for ultimate relaxation. Opt for a single-level deck with clean, uncluttered lines. Incorporate minimalist garden seating and strategically placed potted plants to add a touch of greenery without overwhelming the space. The key to a minimalist deck is creating a serene and clutter-free environment.

Innovative Decking Accents

Why not add some personality to your decking design with innovative accents? Incorporate built-in seating, planters, or a pergola to create a multifunctional and aesthetically pleasing space. Consider integrating a built-in bar or outdoor kitchen for entertaining guests. The possibilities are endless when it comes to innovative decking accents.

A Decking Design that Glows

Extend the usability of your deck into the evening by integrating lighting elements. Choose solar-powered deck lights, string lights, or even recessed lighting to create a warm and inviting ambience. Highlight architectural features, such as stairs or railings, with LED lighting for both safety and aesthetics. Create a magical atmosphere by incorporating subtle lighting that enhances the natural beauty of your deck while providing a cosy glow for nighttime gatherings.

Go Rustic with Reclaimed Wood

Highlight the charm of recycled or reclaimed wood for a rustic yet elegant deck. The weathered appearance adds character, creating a timeless space that blends with nature. Consider using old barn wood or salvaged timbers for a unique and environmentally friendly touch. The irregularities and knots in the wood will add visual interest and authenticity to your outdoor haven.

The perfect decking design goes beyond aesthetics; it's about creating a space that reflects your style, enhances your outdoor living experience, and stands the test of time. They provide a natural extension of your living area and often become the heart of your outdoor activities. To ensure your deck remains beautiful and functional for years to come, regular decking maintenance is essential.

Below we explore the importance of maintaining your deck, how to care for different types of decking material, and provide you with some valuable advice to keep your outdoor space in top condition.

The Importance of Decking Maintenance

Prolongs the Lifespan

Decking, regardless of the material, is subjected to constant exposure to the elements. Sun, rain, snow, and even foot traffic can cause wear and tear over time. Regular maintenance can help prevent rot, decay, and other issues that can shorten the lifespan of your deck. By investing time in maintenance, you can add years to the life of your deck.

Enhances Safety

A well-maintained deck is a safer deck. Loose boards, protruding nails, and slippery surfaces are common problems that can lead to accidents. Regular inspections and maintenance help identify and address these issues, ensuring your deck is a safe place for you, your family, and your guests.

Maintains Aesthetic Appeal

One of the primary reasons homeowners invest in decks is to enhance the visual appeal of their outdoor space. Neglected decks can quickly become an eyesore, with mould, mildew, and discolouration taking over. Regular cleaning and the use of timber treatments and stains can ensure your decking looks great from season to season.

How to Maintain Different Types of Decking

No matter the type of decking, regular cleaning and maintenance are essential and can help you spot issues early, saving you time and money. There are various decking materials available, each with its own level of maintenance. The material you choose should depend on how much time you have to spend on maintaining your deck.

Softwood Decking Maintenance

Softwood decking, which includes popular choices like redwood (pine), Larch or Cedar, requires specific maintenance to keep it in top condition. They should be regularly cleaned to remove dirt, debris, and stains. A gentle detergent and a soft brush work well. Avoid using a high-pressure washer, as it can damage the wood fibres.

Softwood decking benefits from yearly staining and sealing to protect it from UV rays, moisture, and fungal growth. This type of decking is more susceptible to rot, decay, and insect infestations, so regular inspections are crucial. Check for loose or rotting boards, screws or nails that may be protruding, and any signs of insect damage. Replace or repair as needed.

Hardwood Decking Maintenance

Hardwood decking is known for its durability and resistance to decay. However, it still requires maintenance to preserve its natural beauty.

Regular cleaning to remove dirt and debris is essential. A mild detergent and a soft brush can be used for this purpose. Similar to softwood, avoid high-pressure washers that can damage the wood.

While hardwood is naturally more resistant to the elements, some homeowners prefer to maintain its colour and protect it with a UV-resistant sealer or specific hardwood oil. The frequency of application varies but can be as infrequent as every 2-5 years. It is less prone to rot and decay, but it's not immune to issues. Regularly inspect for loose boards or any structural problems.

Composite Decking Maintenance

Composite decking is known for being relatively low maintenance, but that doesn't mean it's completely maintenance-free.

To maintain composite decking, you should sweep away debris and regularly clean the surface with a mild detergent and a soft-bristle brush. Avoid using abrasive cleaning tools that can damage the surface.

Composite decks don't require staining or sealing, but it's still a good idea to check the manufacturer's recommendations. Some composites may benefit from a protective coating to enhance longevity.

Regularly Inspect for any structural issues, replace any damaged boards and check for mould or mildew growth in damp areas.

More Decking Maintenance Tips

Proper Grading and Drainage

Ensure that your deck is built with a gradient to direct water away from the house and provide adequate drainage. Poor drainage can lead to water pooling, which can speed up the deterioration of your decking.

Preventive Measures

You could place mats or rugs in high-traffic areas to reduce wear and tear, if you intend to do this make sure that you don't leave them out in the rain as they could trap the water and create a mouldy mess. Using furniture pads can also help protect the deck's surface. Additionally, be mindful of what you place on the deck, as heavy or sharp objects can cause damage.

Safety First

Always prioritise safety when working on your deck. Ensure you wear appropriate protective safety gear and use caution when using tools. If you're unsure about a repair or maintenance task, consider reaching out to your local timber merchants for advice to avoid potential accidents.

Decking maintenance is an investment in the longevity, safety, and beauty of your outdoor space. By following these basic guidelines for your specific decking material, conducting regular inspections, and practising preventive measures, you can ensure your deck remains part of your home for years to come.

If you’re considering garden decking and would like further advice on choosing the right material for your requirements, please get in touch.
urn:store:1:blog:post:12https://www.bendreybros.co.uk/the-different-types-of-hot-tub-deckingThe Different Types of Hot Tub Decking

When it comes to turning your garden into a sanctuary of relaxation and entertainment, the addition of a hot tub is at the top of the list for many, but have you thought about hot tub decking?

What is Hot Tub Decking?

Hot tub decking, as the name suggests, is specially designed decking or flooring that surrounds and supports a hot tub. This decking type is typically made from wood deck boards or composite decking, which is supplied by timber merchants and custom-built to fit the specific dimensions and shape of the hot tub and your garden.

Hot tub decking provides a stable and aesthetically pleasing platform for your hot tub, enhancing both functionality and visual appeal.

Types of Hot Tub Decking

When weighing up your options you should choose decking that reflects both your personal style and preferences as well as practical aspects, such as maintenance and functionality. Below we list the different hot tub decking options that are available:

Standard Decking: A practical and no-fuss option, which is placed on one level either close to the house or in another part of the garden, such as a corner. Suitable for most gardens.

Multi-Level Decking: Create visual interest and define different areas by incorporating multiple levels of decking. This can allow you to have a dedicated space for the hot tub, while also providing space for seating, dining, or entertaining.

Built-In Seating: Combine your hot tub decking with conveniently placed built-in garden furniture around the edges of the deck. This not only saves space but also provides a spot for guests to relax whilst you are using the hot tub.

Sunken Hot Tub: For a sleek and modern look, consider sunken hot tub decking. This design involves placing the hot tub below the deck's surface, giving a built-in appearance and allowing for easy entry and exit of the hot tub.

When it comes to deciding what material is best for your hot tub decking, you should consider the look you are after, practicality, cost and longevity.

Wood Decking

Wooden hot tub decking is the most traditional option and can be a relatively affordable one too. Our wood decking options are made from premium quality hardwood deck boards and softwood deck boards which can be customised and cut to your preferred size and shape.

However, when not properly maintained, wood decking can be prone to warping and rot. It is also easily stained from hot tub water, due to the chemicals used to keep the water safe and clean, and should be properly treated and sealed to prolong its life.

Composite Decking

Composite decking is made from wood fibres and plastic polymers, making it more durable than traditional wood decking. It is slip-resistant, barefoot friendly, and can be pressure washed for easy cleaning.

Composite is also resistant to mould, rotting, and insect damage, making it a great option for decking that surrounds a hot tub. It doesn’t require staining or treating either, great for those looking for low-maintenance decking.

Check out our blog on how to clean composite decking in five easy steps.

Benefits of Hot Tub Decking

There are several benefits to having custom-made hot tub decking. Not only does it provide a safe and sturdy home for your hot tub but it can also help with aesthetic appeal, accessibility, and durability and can even increase property value.

Aesthetic Appeal: One of the primary benefits of hot tub decking is its ability to elevate the overall aesthetic of a garden. The clean lines, rich textures and natural colours of both wood and composite can complement any outdoor setting, creating a visually appealing focal point.

Accessibility: Hot tub decking makes accessing your hot tub easier and more comfortable. It provides a level surface that can prevent slips and trips, ensuring safe entry and exit from the hot tub.

Durability: Quality decking materials, when properly looked after, are designed to withstand the elements. This durability ensures that your decking will look great and last for years to come.

Privacy: Depending on your garden's layout, you can easily incorporate privacy screens, fencing panels, or overhead shelters such as a pergola or gazebo into the design. These not only provide privacy and shelter but can create a cosy setting when relaxing.

Increase Property Value: Adding a well-designed hot tub decking to your garden can increase the value of your property by improving garden functionality and appearance, something potential buyers may see as an attractive feature.

Where Should I Place Hot Tub Decking?

The placement of your hot tub decking is something that should be carefully thought out and there are things you should consider to ensure it can be utilised in the best way possible.

Placing your hot tub decking close to your house is a practical choice, as it provides easy access to amenities such as bathrooms and may even encourage you to use your hot tub more frequently if it is easily accessible.

Ensure the location you choose allows for easy delivery and installation of the hot tub. It should also have proper drainage to prevent water buildup and be close to a tap for refilling and an electric supply to run the hot tub.

If your garden offers scenic views, take advantage of them and position your hot tub deck to overlook the scenic landscape.

If privacy is something you desire, placing your hot tub decking close to the house or a fence could be an option, or consider having privacy screens or shrubs and plants surrounding your hot tub area.

Can I build Hot Tub Decking as a DIY project?

Filled hot tubs are very heavy. 1 litre of water weighs 1kg so if your hot tub has a capactity of 700 litres, your filled hot tub will weigh over 700kg. A very large hot tub could weigh upwards of 3000kg once filled! Therefore, if you intend to position the hot tub on top of the decking we would recommend that you contact a qualified builder or decking professional to design & build the hot tub decking for you.

A professional should also be consulted if you intend to raise your decking over 600mm above ground level.

If you simply intend to surround the hot tub with decking then provided you can drill holes, tighten screws and bolts, read a spirit level and use a saw, then this decking project is well within your scope.

A hot tub is a great addition to any garden, providing a blend of style, comfort, and relaxation. By carefully considering the placement, materials, and design of your hot tub decking, you can create an outdoor oasis that not only enhances the design of your garden but also offers a perfect space to unwind and enjoy the outdoors, no matter the season.

If you have further questions regarding hot tub decking, please feel free to contact us at Bendrey Bros.
urn:store:1:blog:post:11https://www.bendreybros.co.uk/maintaining-slip-resistant-deckingMaintaining Slip-Resistant Decking: Dos and Don'ts

Maintaining Slip-Resistant Decking: Dos and Don'ts

Your garden decking is exposed to many different types of weather conditions, from heavy downpours to hot summer days. This means that decking can get discoloured, warped, slippery and weaken over time.

This is why speciality decking has been created, such as our slip-resistant decking. Maintaining anti-slip decking is crucial to prevent and ensure your deck remains a safe and inviting space.

In this blog, we'll explore the dos and don'ts of maintaining slip-resistant decking.

The Dos of Maintaining Slip-resistant Decking

Regular Cleaning:

- Sweep and Clear Debris: Start by sweeping your deck with a broom regularly to remove leaves, dirt, and other debris that can make your deck surface slippery. These particles can accumulate moisture and create a hazardous environment.

- Use a Mild Detergent: When cleaning your deck, opt for a mild detergent mixed with warm water. This gentle solution can effectively remove the buildup of dirt and grime without damaging the slip-resistant surface. Avoid harsh chemicals, which can degrade the slip-resistant coating over time.

Pressure Washing:

- Use Low Pressure: Pressure washing is an excellent way to deep-clean your deck occasionally. However, use a low-pressure setting and maintain a safe distance to prevent damage to the slip-resistant coating.

- Maintain a Consistent Motion: When pressure washing, move the wand in a consistent motion along the wood grain to avoid streaking or damaging the surface.

Routine Inspections:

- Check for Damaged Areas: Regularly inspect your deck for any signs of wear and tear, such as peeling or chipped slip-resistant coatings, loose boards, or nails. Address these issues promptly to maintain the deck's safety and longevity.

- Assess Drainage: Ensure that your deck's drainage system is functioning correctly. Proper drainage helps prevent the accumulation of water, reducing the risk of slip-related accidents.

Sealing and Re-coating:

- Recoat Periodically: Depending on the type of slip-resistant coating you have, you may need to reapply it periodically. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for the recommended maintenance schedule. Typically, you'll need to recoat every few years to ensure optimal slip resistance.

- Seal the Wood: If your slip-resistant decking is made of wood, consider sealing it with a quality wood sealer. Sealing prevents moisture penetration and helps maintain the wood's integrity.

Use Proper Cleaning Tools:

- Soft Bristle Brushes: When scrubbing your deck, use soft bristle brushes or brooms. Avoid abrasive materials that can damage the slip-resistant surface.

- Non-metallic Shovels: In snowy climates, use non-metallic shovels for snow removal to prevent scratching or gouging the deck surface.

The Don'ts of Slippery Decking

Avoid Harsh Chemicals:

- Say No to Bleach: While bleach may seem like a powerful cleaner, it can damage the slip-resistant surface and discolour your deck. Stick to mild detergents instead.

- Steer Clear of Solvents: Solvent-based cleaners can strip away the protective coating, leaving your decking board more susceptible to slipping.

Don't Neglect Regular Maintenance:

- Ignoring Repairs: Ignoring damaged areas or loose boards can lead to further deterioration and increased safety hazards.

- Skipping Re-coating: Neglecting to reapply slip-resistant coatings as recommended by the manufacturer can result in decreased slip resistance over time.

Don't Overlook Snow and Ice Removal:

- Don't Use Rock Salt: Rock salt can corrode your deck's metal fasteners and damage the wood. Instead, use ice melt products specifically designed for decks.

- Avoid Metal Shovels: Metal shovels can scratch and gouge your deck's surface, compromising its slip resistance. Opt for plastic or rubber shovels instead.

Don't Neglect Proper Drainage:

- Allowing Puddles: Standing water can be a slip hazard. Ensure that your deck's drainage system is in good working condition to prevent puddles from forming.

Don't Rush Pressure Washing:

- High Pressure: Using high-pressure settings or holding the pressure washer nozzle too close to the deck can cause damage to the slip-resistant coating. Take your time and use low pressure.

In conclusion, maintaining a slip-resistant deck is essential for safety and enjoyment. Regular cleaning, routine inspections, and proper recoating are key to preserving your deck's slip resistance.

Avoid harsh chemicals, prioritise snow and ice removal, and always address damage promptly. By following these dos and don'ts, you can ensure that your outdoor space remains safe for years.

Contact Bendrey Brothers, If you're thinking, or looking to purchase timber decking for your garden, feel free to contact us, you’ll find us within convenient access from Bristol and Bath.

urn:store:1:blog:post:10https://www.bendreybros.co.uk/modern-composite-decking-inspirations-for-small-gardensModern Composite Decking Inspirations for Small Gardens
Modern Small Garden Ideas: Making Composite Decking Work for Your Small Garden

If you've been on the hunt for modern small garden ideas, you're in the right place.

When it comes to elevating the appeal of your garden's landscape, decking reigns as a timeless, practical, and visually appealing addition to any garden. It is made from wood flour, plastic, and other materials, which are compressed and moulded into sturdy composite wood. This makes it an excellent alternative to traditional timber decks or PVC decking.

Benefits of composite decking

It is not a surprise that composite decking is growing in popularity as it has excellent qualities that make it stand out. Its main benefits are:

Long-Lasting: Composite decking is renowned for its durability; it doesn't rot like traditional timber and is resistant to insects and decay.

Low Maintenance: No need for spending hours painting and waiting for it to dry. It stays strong and requires minimal cleaning.

Eco-Friendly: Our composite decking is made using recycled plastic (every square metre contains the equivalent of more than 3000 plastic bottle caps) and timber, it's an environmentally friendly choice. Plus, its longevity reduces the need for frequent replacements, saving resources.

Cost-Efficient: A longer lifespan with low maintenance translates to cost savings compared to traditional timber decking.

Versatility: Available in various colours, textures, and styles, composite decking offers a wide range of design options for outdoor spaces.

Slip resistant: Our composite decking is safe in wet and dry weather.

Let’s explore how we can make composite decking work for your small garden:

Modern Composite Decking Ideas for Small Gardens

Modern composite decking offers a world of possibilities for enhancing the beauty and functionality of your small garden. In this blog, we’ll explore three key subcategories—Colour, Style, and Storage—that can help you make the most of your small outdoor space.

Colour

As mentioned, one of the standout benefits of composite decking is the wide range of colours available. In a small garden, your choice of decking colour can significantly impact the overall look and feel of the space. Opt for lighter tones for a small garden, making the space more open and inviting.

And to take it up a notch, use multiple colours to create visual interest. By incorporating more than one hue, you can make your deck visually appealing and break up the monotony of a single colour.

Consider adding a contrasting border around your deck to add a touch of sophistication. This enhances the aesthetics and makes navigating your decking easier, as you can easily see the edges. For this design, Bendrey Bros’ dual-sided reversible composite decking boards are highly recommended!

And here is a bonus tip! Opt for vibrant and brightly coloured garden furniture, which draws attention away from the limited space and makes your garden burst with character instead.

You can even take it further by painting trellises or pergolas to complement the composite wood, creating a harmonious look throughout your garden.

Storage

In a small garden, making the most of vertical space is crucial. Consider a multi-level composite decking design that provides different zones for various activities and incorporates storage underneath. These hidden compartments can be used for stashing gardening tools, cushions, or other outdoor essentials, keeping your small garden neat and organised.

Style

No matter the size of your garden, certain things can make any garden more glamorous. Certain styles of composite decking can also make your garden appear bigger. Let’s explore a few creative ideas:

Creative Patterns with Tile Composite Decking:

Explore tile composite decking options for a touch of elegance and style. These decking boards mimic the look of tiles and can be arranged in intricate patterns or classic designs, adding a unique charm to your small garden.

Deconstructed Pathways:

Another creative idea is to use squares of composite wood to create a deconstructed pathway in your garden. Fill the gaps between these squares with pebbles for added texture and visual appeal. These pathways can guide your eyes through the garden and create a sense of space.

Elongated Pathway to give the illusion of space:

To make your small garden appear more spacious, consider constructing a pathway that stretches the length of the garden as this elongates the look of your garden. Taking it a step further, use a chevron pattern that points outward, giving the illusion of a longer pathway.

Curvy Decking for Dimension:

Curved decking adds a sense of dimension to your small garden. The flowing lines break up the usual straight lines and create an interesting visual contrast with the surrounding greenery.

Lighting:

Don't forget to include lights in your decking design. Outdoor lighting extends your deck's usability into the evening and adds a touch of magic to the space. Use well-placed lights to brighten up key areas and create a cosy ambience.

Now, that’s how you make the most of your small garden! Consider these modern composite decking ideas for small gardens that will bring life to your outdoor area and enable you to capitalise on your limited space.

By considering these colour, style, and storage ideas you can transform your small garden into a functional, cosy and attractive outdoor haven.

Opt for these modern composite decking ideas for small gardens

Composite decking has proven to be a great small garden landscaping idea. For small gardens, you need creative space-saving solutions and tricks that make your garden appear bigger. Timber fences have been a staple in the world of landscaping for many years, and for good reason!

Below we explore different types of timber fencing available from a timber merchant, including feather edge fencing, Reinas fence, trellis panels, Venetian fence panels, picket fencing, and round fencing. By the end of this guide, after weighing up the pros and cons, you'll be well-equipped to choose the best garden fencing for your needs.

Pros of Timber Fencing

Aesthetic Appeal: Timber fencing exudes natural warmth and charm that complements any architectural style. The rustic beauty of wood can effortlessly blend with both traditional and modern landscapes, giving your property a timeless and inviting look.

Versatility in Design: Timber can be easily shaped and customised, allowing you to create a fence that matches your unique style and preferences. Whether you opt for a classic picket design or a contemporary horizontal layout, timber fencing provides endless design possibilities.

Eco-Friendly Options: Timber is a renewable resource, making it an environmentally conscious choice for fencing. When sourced sustainably (like ours), timber fencing can contribute to your efforts to reduce your carbon footprint and support responsible forestry practices.

Easy Installation and Repairs: Timber fences are relatively easy to install and repair. With the right tools and a bit of DIY know-how, you can save money by maintaining and fixing your fence without having to hire professionals.

Cost-Effective Choice: Timber fencing tends to be more budget-friendly compared to other fencing materials like wrought iron or vinyl. This makes it an attractive option for homeowners looking to enhance their outdoor spaces without breaking the bank.

Natural Insulator: Wood possesses natural insulating properties, which can help reduce noise pollution and create a serene environment within your property.

Cons of Timber Fencing

Maintenance Requirements: While timber fencing adds a touch of natural elegance, it can require regular maintenance to keep its beauty intact. You'll need to use timber treatment, or paint the wood periodically to protect it from moisture, rot, and pests.

Vulnerability to Weather: Wood is susceptible to weather-related damage such as warping, splitting, and fading. Harsh sunlight, heavy rain, and extreme temperatures can take a toll on timber fencing over time.

Limited Lifespan: Compared to some alternative materials like metal or vinyl, timber fencing has a shorter lifespan. However, proper maintenance and care can significantly extend the life of your timber fence.

Popular Timber Fence Types

Now, let's delve into the benefits of some popular timber fence panel types that we have available.

Venetian Fence Panel

Venetian fence panels are an eye-catching choice for most gardens. Venetian fence panels consist of horizontal slats with gaps between them, allowing for both privacy and visibility. They can be purchased as pre-made panels or, using durable Western Red Cedar timber battens, you can build custom-sized Venetian fence screens.

They also act as a windbreak while allowing sunlight to filter through. Additionally, these panels can be painted or stained to match the colour scheme of your garden.

Madrid Panel

The Madrid Fence Panel, although more expensive, boasts a classic sturdy design with vertical wooden slats that create a traditional and cosy feel that provides privacy and a solid barrier against the wind. Due to cross panel slats, maintenance may require spray painting instead of brush work.

Reinas Panels:

If you're looking to add a touch of sophistication to your property, Reinas Fence Panels are an excellent choice. The lattice panel style at the top of the fence has a more decorative feel to it, which allows wind and light to pass through.

Just remember that the detailed design may require extra attention, especially when cleaning and varnishing, to maintain top-notch condition of your fence.

Trellis Panels

If you're looking to add an elegant and decorative element to your garden, trellis panels are a great timber fencing option. These panels are designed with latticework that is great for climbing plants such as ivy, roses, or clematis. They add a touch of charm to your garden while maintaining a tasteful level of privacy.

Milano Panels

The Milano Fence Panel design is all about creating a bold statement. The strong horizontal lines and sleek appearance make this option ideal for contemporary and minimalist landscapes. As with any horizontal design, regular upkeep will be needed to prevent debris from accumulating between the slats.

The Milano Panel is a slightly cheaper alternative, although as it is designed to allow the wind to pass through the construction is not as solid as some of our other panels. It is an excellent choice for a suburban garden that requires privacy.

Feather Edge Fencing

Feather edge fencing is a classic choice of fence for many garden owners. This style of fencing consists of overlapping vertical timber boards that are tapering, this creates a seamless sturdy barrier around your garden, providing excellent privacy.

One of the primary advantages of feather edge boards and fencing is their durability. These boards are usually made from high-quality wood, such as cedar or pine, ensuring that your fence can withstand the elements and last for many years.

Picket Fencing

Picket fencing is a timeless and charming choice that brings a touch of nostalgia to your garden. These fences are commonly made of wood and are evenly spaced vertical boards (pickets) with a horizontal rail at the top.

Picket fencing is an excellent type of garden fencing to add curb appeal to your property. It works well in urban and rural settings and can be customised to suit your design preferences. While picket fences may not provide the same level of privacy as other options, they are perfect for marking boundaries, keeping pets in, and creating a warm and inviting garden space.

Round Fencing

Round fencing, often made from rustic materials like logs or bamboo, offers a unique and natural look to your garden. Round fence posts feature a stake and pointed bottom for easy ground installation and are made from good-quality timber, ensuring durability for light-duty or temporary fencing.

The organic appeal of round garden fencing makes it a suitable choice for gardens that aim for a more rustic or eco-friendly look. They can also be used to support small trees, or as boundary markers, while still allowing a seamless connection with the surrounding landscape.

Timber Fencing Maintenance

No matter which style of timber fencing you choose, each will require a level of maintenance to keep them in tip-top condition. Due to being exposed to the elements all year round, timber can be prone to water damage, rot, UV damage and even insect damage. Protecting the wood with the correct treatments, stains and finishes is a surefire way to ensure they last for years to come.

In Conclusion

Timber fencing brings a layer of security for your home and property, while offering a range of design options to suit your taste.

While it comes with maintenance considerations, the timeless beauty and versatility of timber fencing make it a choice worth considering for your property. Remember, with proper care, your timber fence will stand strong, adding character and value to your home for years to come.

If you need expert advice on choosing the right timber fencing for your garden, get in touch to discuss the options available or check them out on our website.
urn:store:1:blog:post:8https://www.bendreybros.co.uk/repaint-garden-fenceHow To Paint Your Garden Fence
Are you looking for easy ways to add some life to your garden? As the well-known saying goes: ‘preparation is key’.

If you want the best results, ensure to consider these key things before jumping into the fence painting fun:

Condition of the fence

Weather conditions

Choosing whether to use fence paint or to fence stain

Choosing the right fence paint and colour

Whether to hand paint or to use a fence painter

Equipment you will need

Let's look at these in more detail.

Examining The Condition of Your Fence

Thoroughly assess the condition of your fence timber before applying any fence paint or fence stain. This is an essential step that must not be missed to save you time, energy and money. This is because if your fence is deteriorating from fungi, rotting or moulding then painting will not resolve the underlying issues. Fences with these underlying issues wll have a stunted lifespan and will need to be replaced sooner than later.

If your fence is in poor condition, replace your fence with quality softwood timber that is less susceptible to rot. We supply quality softwood timber that is perfect for fence building.

Bonus tip: Use our Barrettine universal preservative to prevent wood rotting and prolong the life of your timber

(To know how to check the condition of your fence, read step 1 of ‘how to paint a garden fence’ below)

Lists of Tools You May Need:

Protective suit or old clothing

Tarpaulin - protect surrounding areas and plants from paint

Painter's tape to mask off any areas you don't want to paint, such as gate fittings or decorative features

Sanding - Depending on the condition of your fence, you may need sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots or remove old paint or stains.

Wood stain or paint - Opt for a paint specifically formulated for fences and outdoor wood surfaces, as it will provide better durability and weather resistance

Fence paint brush / Paint sprayer

Safety goggles

Dust mask - to prevent wood particles being inhaled while sanding

Ladder - for tall fences

Gloves for sanding

Primer - to help stick the paint to the fence whilst providing a more even and long-lasting finish

Universal Preservative - protects wood from rotting

(See how these equipment is used in the ‘how to paint a garden fence’)

Weather conditions

For optimal results, it is crucial you paint in the right weather conditions. Avoid painting in direct sunlight or on rainy or windy days. If the weather is too hot the paint can become clumpy and difficult to apply. If it is too cold the paint will take too long to dry. If it has previously rained or you have washed your fence then it is important that you ensure that your fence is fully dry before painting.

How to Paint A Garden Fence in 7 Easy Steps (with no experience required)

Now let's get into these 7 quick and easy steps to achieve a well painted fence!

Step 1: Checking and prepping

As we have discussed, preparation is key for professional painting. It is important to check your fence for fungi, rot or algae before painting. When looking for rot or fungi, search for any soft yellow spots on the timber. Press a screwdriver into the fence and if it easily sinks in this may be a sign that the wood is rotting. This is best to be resolved by replacing the timber before any painting begins.

Following this, check that you have the necessary equipment (checklist located above).

Wash your fence with a damp cloth to clear it of any debris, dirt or cobweb and allow it to dry completely.

Next Check the weather conditions for the day and that the timber is dry.

Put on your Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): gloves and protective suit/old clothing.

Step 2: Prepare the area

Protect the surrounding areas of your fence such as plants, decking, aquatic environments or anything in close range by covering them with a tarpaulin or old cloth.

Step 3: Sand the fence

For best results, sand your fence down for a smooth application. Ensure you are wearing a dust mask and eye protection during this step to protect yourself from debris and any hazardous particles.

Sand the fence until the surface is smooth. Following this, use a hard bristle brush to wipe away the sanded bits.

Step 4: Prime your fence

To achieve the best results, it is good to apply a fence primer. Before applying any primer check the compatibility of your fence paint with the primer. Fence primer has a multi-purpose function.

Firstly, it can act as an adhesive for paint application thus increasing the lifespan of the paint. Secondly, it also protects the wood from UV rays and moisture from absorbing in the wood and causing mould, rot or fungi growth.

Ensure to keep on your protective gear: gloves, coverup and goggles. Apply the primer by brushing in the direction of the timber grain. Allow 6 - 12 hours for the first layer to dry before adding the next. 2 coats is the minimum required.

Tip: Our Barrettine primer can be used not just as a fence primer but also as a topcoat for the paint. (Not all fence paint requires a topcoat so check the requirements for your paint type)

Ensure that the primer lid is tightly on and store the product in a cool dry area.

Step 5: Apply the paint

Now for the best part: the fence painting!

Twelve hours or more after applying the last coat of primer, apply a thin even amount of paint starting from the top of the fence to the bottom. Paint in the direction that follows the grain of the timber. Use a smaller paint brush for corners, edges or other smaller areas. Good quality paint may only need one coat but for some you may need two or three layers of paint. Before you apply the next coat make sure to allow the paint to dry first.

Tip: before painting your fence you can test paint a small area and let it dry to see if you like the colour on your fence.

Step 6: Cleaning tools

Once finished painting, the next crucial step is to properly clean your paintbrush to ensure its longevity and future use.

Firstly, start by scraping off as much paint as possible inside of your paint tin. Once done, tightly close the fence paint and put it away in a dry and cool place away from direct sunlight.

If you have used a water-based paint, clean your paintbrush by swirling it in warm soapy water and leave it in the water for approximately 2 hours. Dry with a clean cloth and store in a dry place.

For an oil based paint, this is more difficult to remove. You will need to fill a container of white spirit. Be cautious when handling cleaning chemicals such as white spirit, as they can be harmful to you, your hardware and the environment.

Therefore ensure to:

Continue to wear your PPE

Do not use these substances inside your home in your domestic sinks or bathtub but rather outside

Properly dispose of the solvent to protect yourself, others and the environment. We recommend that you read the advice on the packaging thoroughly before handling, using and disposing of white spirit.

Step 7: Garden Fence Maintenance

We expect that a well maintained and painted fence can last for many years before a repaint is needed. It is essential to regularly inspect the fence for signs of wear, damage or rot etc.

Avoid placing heavy objects or leaning anything against the fence as this can lead to chipping or peeling of the paint you worked hard to apply.

For further fence maintenance, ensure that there are no plants or vines growing too close to the fence as they can trap moisture in the fence and cause rot over time. Therefore regularly trim and clear vegetation around the fence to allow airflow and prevent moisture build up.

By following these precautions, regularly inspecting and caring for your fence, you can enjoy a beautifully painted and well-maintained garden fence for years to come1

Summary

Fence painting is a rewarding and cost-effective way to enhance the beauty of your outdoor space. By choosing the right materials, properly preparing the surface, and following the right techniques, you can transform a tired-looking fence into a standout feature. Whether you prefer a classic neutral fence colour or a bold statement fence colour, a fresh coat of paint can make all the difference in revamping your home's exterior and creating an inviting atmosphere that you can enjoy for years to come.

urn:store:1:blog:post:7https://www.bendreybros.co.uk/decking-ideas-for-small-gardensTop 6 Decking Ideas for Small Gardens
When dealing with limited outdoor space, exploring decking ideas for small gardens can really help you utilise your space better than you previously thought possible. Not only do we want to help you maintain your composite decking so that it's immaculate through the year, but also improve its longevity.

If you've got a composite deck, chances are it's because you wanted a low-maintenance garden deck that will hold up well to the elements. And for the most part, composite decking lives up to that promise. But like anything else, it does require some care and cleaning from time to time. Here's some suggestions on how to clean your deck so it always looks its best, however should ensure that you follow the manufacturers guidance if our suggestions conflict with their maintenance instructions.

Step 1: Sweep your composite decking with a broom to remove any loose dirt or debris.

Composite decking is an increasingly popular choice for homeowners looking to upgrade their outdoor space. It's longer lasting and more resistant to weather than traditional wood decking. Sweeping your composite deck regularly with a broom is a great way to ensure debris and dirt does not accumulate on the surface, which can cause discolouration or staining over time. This simple step will help keep your composite deck looking beautiful and increase its longevity.

Step 2: Use a garden hose to spray down and clean composite decking.

Maintaining Composite Decking can lengthen its life, and one of the best ways to do that is with regular pressure washing using a garden hose. Using a nozzle to adjust the intensity of the water pressure is ideal; too much pressure can cause damage, yet not enough pressure can’t get rid of grime and dirt that builds up over time. Spraying down Composite Decking with a garden hose periodically will keep it looking like new.

Step 3: Mix water and dish soap in a bucket, then use a sponge to scrub down your composite decking.

To keep your composite deck in top condition, regularly cleaning it is important. We recommend mixing warm water and dish soap in a bucket first to create warm soapy water. Once that's done, use a sponge to scrub down each composite decking board thoroughly. Make sure not to forget any corners for the best possible result, and enjoy your sparkling clean Composite Decking!

Step 4: Rinse off the soap with clean water from the hose.

After the dirt has been removed using warm soapy water, it is essential to use clean water from a hose to thoroughly rinse the Composite Decking surface. This will prevent any soapy residue left behind which can damage or discolour Composite Decking. To ensure your decking remains in good condition, rinsing should be done regularly with fresh water from a hose.

Step 5: Let your composite decking air dry completely before using it again.

Letting your composite decking air dry completely is essential for protecting it from mould and mildew build-up. Composite decks are much easier to clean because they require minimal maintenance. But this doesn't mean you can skip the important step of letting it dry thoroughly before using it again. Leaving any amount of moisture on the decking can weaken the material and creates a breeding ground for harmful organisms. So take the time to walk away after cleaning and wait until the composite material is completely dry. That way, you can enjoy your composite deck for years to come!

Things to Avoid When Cleaning Composite Decking

Sodium percarbonate bleach can be used on stubbon stains however it should be thoroughly washed off after use, please note that using bleach may cause lightening of the deck colour.

Make sure you use cleaning products which are specific to your composite deck. Avoid using sodium hypochlorite which can cause discolouration on your composite decking. Instead use cleaning products that contain an Oxalic or phosphoric acid base to lighten or remove dirt, please bear in mind that the product may need to sit on the stain for around 10 minutes before rinsing it thoroughly.

If you follow these simple steps, you can easily clean composite decking and keep it looking great for years to come. In fact, with the right care, your composite decking can last up to 25 years. At Bendrey Bros. we understand that this may seem like a difficult task to tackle, so we’ve produced this beginner guide to help you get the job done.

Fence posts are an integral part of your fence, as they act as the backbone. Your posts need to be installed correctly, or you may find that your completed fence is not as sturdy as you intended and may not stand the test of time.

What size of post should I use?

We stock over 40 sizes of wooden fence post, plus a range of concrete posts to choose from, the post size you need is determined by a few factors including:

         The type or style of fence that you’re building;

         The overall fence height;

         The ground conditions; if the ground is soft, you may need a deeper hole than standard;

If you plan to attach something heavy to the post such as a gate, then you may need to use a larger post than a standard fence post.

The most popular post sizes for garden fencing are:

75 x 75mm - Suitable for short and lightweight fencing, this size helps your budget go further.

100 x 100mm - Suitable for most types of fencing. We recommend this post size as it will give you a good strong fence that can stand up to strong wind.

When choosing the post length; don’t forget to allow enough extra length to set in the ground, keep reading to find out more.

Which materials & tools are needed to install a fence post in the ground?

We have put together a kit list (below) to help prepare you for your project! We recommend these products to make your job as easy as possible, some items are optional.

Materials:

Fence Post

Post Mix - Typically 1½ to 2 bags per fence post.

End grain preservative – Apply this to the timber if you need to cut or drill it.

Postsaver Pro-Sleeve – Optional, recommended.

Post cap – Optional.

Tools:

String / Brick Line – Use this to work out the position of your fence and ensure that your fence posts are fitted in a straight line. Working out where to position your fence post

Before you start; to avoid any unwanted surprises, it is advisable to obtain plans showing the location of any cables or pipes buried in your garden. The photos below show a mains cable that was damaged when a post hole was being dug. These cables & gas supply were buried just 250mm below ground in an unmarked trench. Luckily the post hole digger had fibreglass handles, the electrical spark took a good bite out of the post hole digger blade.

If you are building a fence on a boundary that adjoins another property, we recommend checking whether the boundary is owned by you or your neighbour, or it might be shared equally. This information should be in your property deed but isn’t always clear. We recommend that you discuss your plans with your neighbour before building the fence to avoid any disputes after the fence is built.

Step 2. Digging the post hole

When you have checked that there aren’t any utilities near your post positions, you’re ready for step to on how to install a fence post - digging!

If the ground is firm and not recently disturbed then we recommend digging the post hole slightly larger than the post, the narrower the better. The minimum hole size is dictated by the size of your fence post digging tools. If you use our recommended tools, you should be able to dig a fairly narrow hole which will reduce the amount of soil that you need to dig out and dispose of, it also minimises the amount of post mix needed to fill the hole back in.

The depth of the hole you need to dig is determined by a number of variable factors:

The condition of the soil: If the soil is soft you may need to dig deeper.

The height of the post / fence: A tall fence will need deeper post holes, to prevent the posts being pushed over by wind.

What is the post going to support? If you’re fitting something heavy like a gate, you may need to dig deeper.

Wind exposure: In windy, exposed areas you may need to dig deeper post holes.

Our recommendation for a typical garden fence post, in normal conditions; you should aim for a minimum post hole depth of 450mm (18”), preferably 600mm (24”), the deeper the better.

For extra high fences and for fences in windy areas, you may need to dig a deeper hole. If the soil is soft, you need to dig down far enough to get to solid ground, otherwise in windy conditions the fence post will begin to rock from side to side, which will lead to future problems.

Bear in mind that when digging with hand tools it becomes impractical to dig a narrow post hole any deeper than about a metre, at this depth it becomes difficult to scoop the soil from the bottom of the hole. If a deeper hole is needed then you may need to use a mechanical fencing auger.

While you are digging, frequently check the post fits in the hole. Check that you are digging in the right place and haven’t gone off course. Make sure the post is still in alignment by checking it against your string line, also check that the hole allows the post to be fitted perfectly plumb, as it can be easy to accidentally dig at an angle, especially on sloping ground or if you have had to dig out large stones.

Step 3. Fitting the Postsaver Pro-Sleeve (optional)

Postsaver Pro-Sleeves are a cost effective way to prolong the life of wooden fence posts. The video below explains how to install Postsaver sleeves.

Step 4. Installing the fence post

When you have finished digging your post hole; place the post into the hole, check that the post lines up with your string line and check that it will stand up straight and in line with your other posts. Check that the post it is going to be in the correct position to suit your panel and gravel board (if applicable).

You are now ready to set the post in the ground with post mix. Post mix sets quickly! When mixed with water it becomes firm between 1-2 minutes, and will be solid within 5-10 minutes. To avoid making a mistake, you need to be ready to work fast and have everything you need to hand:

Attach your post level to the post, or get your spirit level ready to use

Get two bags of post mix open and ready to use

Get your water ready, either a hose pipe or a few buckets

Get your piece of batten ready to poke / podge the post mix

Half fill the hole with water, then pour the post mix into the hole. Ensure the post doesn’t accidentally move when you pour in the post mix. Continually check the post is plumb and square to the string line.

Hold the post in the correct position until the post mix becomes firm. Top up the hole to about 25mm (1 inch) from the top of the post hole with dry post mix, then you can cover the hole with soil.

After 10 minutes your new post will now be solid enough to attach your fence panel, fence rails and gravel board with screws or nails.

Use the empty post mix bags to bag up excess soil, ready for disposal.

Buying our products

I hope this guide has helped and if you’ve found this interesting, we have future beginner guides in the pipeline. To help our customers understand, we have produced a series of articles to explain some of the most common industry words and phrases that can cause confusion. Our first article is a basic introduction into one of our core product ranges, “Carcassing Timber”.

Carcassing Timber

The word ‘carcass’ usually refers to the skeleton of a body, however in the case of construction ‘Carcassing’ refers to the timber used to build the skeleton or framework of a structure. The description ‘Carcassing Timber’ typically includes all graded building timber that is commonly used for; floor joists, stud walls, ceiling joists, rafters, roof battens, decking framework, and so on.

Alternative names for Carcassing Timber

Building Timber

Structural Timber

Graded Timber

C16 Timber

C24 Timber

C16 Treated

C24 Treated

Regularised Timber

Kiln-dried & Regularised (K.D. – Reg’d)

Carcassing Timber origin and species:

In the U.K. timber market, Carcassing Timber is mainly supplied as either Homegrown softwood or Imported softwood.

Homegrown softwood is sourced from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Homegrown Carcassing is predominantly produced from whitewood, which is a trade term for a number of softwood species that are pale in colour e.g. spruce.

Imported softwood is sourced from various European countries where there are large sustainable forests, they typically have cold climates.

Imported Carcassing is predominantly produced from whitewood but can be mixed with redwood. The timber species used are the same as the homegrown timber but the colder climates cause the timber to grow slowly which improves the quality.

Carcassing Timber Grades:

During the sawmilling process, Carcassing Timber is tested and marked with a grading stamp to identify the timber grade. The timber is graded based on a number of factors such as timber density, knot size, knot frequency, etc.

The most common Carcassing grades available in the U.K. are:

C16 – A relatively low grade used for non-structural purposes such as non-structural partition walls.

C24 – A better quality grade used for load bearing, structural purposes such as floor joists, roof timbers etc.

‘C’ stands for coniferous, which relates to the timber species type.

Homegrown Carcassing Timber is generally graded C16 as it is fast-grown due to the relatively warm and wet U.K. climate. Fast timber growth causes deficiencies such as wide grain pattern, low density and low strength. Wide grain patterns can also cause the timber to be unstable and prone to movement such as warping and splitting.

Imported Carcassing Timber can be either C16 or C24, sometimes packs may contain a mix of both grades.

At Bendrey Brothers Ltd. we aim to stock all C24 grade Carcassing Timber (subject to availability). The higher-grade C24 product can be slightly more expensive than C16 but the quality is much better. C24 stays much straighter, especially through hot summer months, plus it can be used for a wider range of projects.

Carcassing Timber Production

Carcassing Timber goes through a series of processes before it is ready to be used:

Logs are sawn into the required sizes.

The sawn timber is then kiln-dried (K.D.) to stabilise it and minimise the effects of shrinkage after production. Drying the timber also prepares it for the next step of the process.

The timber goes through a machining process called regularising.

The aim of the regularising process is to make the timber an accurate, uniform size throughout every piece of timber within a pack. In construction it is much easier to work with regular, equal sized pieces of timber.

Regularising is the same process as planing (as in using a carpentry plane) but the purpose isn’t to give a perfectly smooth finish, it is to make the timber uniform in size. The corners are normally slightly rounded to remove sharp splinters.
Please note: the regularising process reduces the nominal timber size (Nominal means the original size before machining): e.g. 47mm x 100mm timber finishes approximately 45mm x 95mm.

Although the product finishes at 45mm x 95mm, Timber Merchants usually name the finished product 47mm x 100mm because that is what it was produced from.

Timber Preservative / Treatment

In the U.K. Carcassing can be bought ‘treated’ and ‘untreated’ (sometimes described as ‘clean’)

Treatment refers to a liquid chemical preservative that is commercially applied to timber under pressure in a vacuum chamber. The vacuum sucks out all the air and then replaces it with liquid preservative. The pressure in the chamber forces the preservative deep into the timber. There are various preservative chemicals available on the market. Tanalith-E is commonly used, this is where the now generic word ‘Tanalised’ comes from.

A basic Treatment guide:

Treatment Class:

Use Class 1 – Internal building timbers with no risk of wetting or condensation.

Use Class 2 – Internal building timbers with a risk of wetting or condensation.

Use Class 3 – External building, fencing and landscaping timbers used out of ground contact.

Use class 4 – External building, fencing and landscaping timbers used in ground contact.

Carcassing Timber is not usually available in every specific Use Class. The Use Class of our stock is dictated by stock availability of the big producers and importers when we’re sourcing our stock.

Most merchants will not specify which treatment class their Carcassing Timber is, they will only say it is either treated or untreated. It is worth checking the treatment Use Class of the Carcassing Timber on offer is correct for your needs when planning your project.

Environmental Impact

All Carcassing Timber supplied by Bendrey Brothers Ltd. is produced from carefully managed, sustainable forests. The sawmills and suppliers that we buy from are accredited to either the FSC and/or PEFC schemes.

We will take a closer look at the environmental benefits of using timber for construction in a future article.

Want to Purchase our Products?

If you’ve found this interesting, we have future articles in the pipeline.
